DREDGE
(Copied from a scrapped blogpost.)
DREDGE is a game where you fish and upgrade your boat and stuff!! I first picked up the game because GeminiTay’s Hermitcraft Season 10 base is inspired by it.
A lot of people describe DREDGE as a cozy fishing game and for the most part, yeah it is. I think it’s just because people aren’t easily scared, but DREDGE is technically also a bit of an environmental horror game. Like, you can’t shake off the feeling that there’s always something lurking below the water. It’s just as addictive as any other fishing game though!!
I really love DREDGE’s art direction and I can see why Gem used it as inspiration, it’s great. I love the art of all the fish I immediately bought the artbook after I finished the game. When my wrist gets better I really wanna try and see if I can recreate some of the fish drawings in it...
Something I will say is perfect about DREDGE, for me specifically, is that it’s scary, but it’s not that scary. Well, it is that scary to me, but you can easily brave through it.
For context, I have an unbelievably bad track record with horror games. I’m too scared to play any sort of horror, which also means I make my siblings pick the non-scary Roblox games and sometimes even that’s too much. If you want to know how bad it gets, I could not finish the first Nancy Drew game because it was too scary for me. The first Nancy Drew game has literally zero horror elements in it.
But yeah! I don’t know if I’ve gotten braver over the years, but even though I’m that sort of person, I was very easily able to get through the whole game. There’s always the option to turn off like all hostile scary elements in the game, but I kinda feel like that sort of defeats the purpose of the game and you could just play any other fishing game at that point...
It’s kind of like a very, very, very, very tame version of Giant’s Deep from Outer Wilds.
>(If you’re thinking to yourself “Given the rest of Outer Wilds, Giant’s Deep isn’t even that scary”, yeah... I know. To you and most normal people maybe lol.)
I think that if you’re trying to build up your tolerance to horror or just feeling scared in general, DREDGE is probably one of the best games to start with. Maybe not if you have extreme thalassophobia though... Nancy Drew might work out better for you than me.
